Frequently Asked Questions

Planning a safari or Zanzibar holiday can come with many questions. Here you’ll find answers to the most common questions about Tanzania safaris, Zanzibar travel, visas, insurance, and planning your adventure with Savanna to Sea.

Safari FAQ

The most popular Safari destinations include Serengeti National Park Creator Tanya National Park, Lake Manyara and Mikumi.

Most travellers choose a safari of 3-5 days to explore Tanzania’s northern parks. However, longer safaris of 6–10 days allow for deeper exploration and more wildlife viewing. And many guests on Zanzibar, with limited time, tend to opt for the 1 day safari to Mikumi.

Tanzania is home to the famous Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. Visitors can also see giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, wildebeest, hippos, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species.

Wildlife sightings vary depending on the park and season.

The Great Wildebeest Migration happens year-round as millions of wildebeest move across the Serengeti ecosystem.

• January – March: Calving season in the southern Serengeti

• June – July: Grumeti River crossings

• August – October: Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti

Each stage offers a unique wildlife experience.

Safari prices vary depending on the number of days, parks visited and

accommodation style.

Please see our Safari Itineraries page and contact us for a personalised quote.

Safari accommodations range from budget campsites to luxury safari lodges and tented camps.

Options usually include:

• Budget camping safaris

• Mid-range lodge safaris

• Luxury safari lodges and tented camps

Each option offers a different style of comfort and experience.

You can learn more about accommodations on our Camps & Lodges page.

Safaris organised by Savanna to Sea Adventures are private experiences, meaning your safari vehicle and guide are dedicated exclusively to you and your travel group. Private safaris allow for greater flexibility, more time for wildlife viewing, and a personalised itinerary.

For certain short trips, such as Mikumi National Park day trips from Zanzibar, shared options are common. If you prefer a private experience, we are always happy to arrange a fully private safari for you.

Packing for safari is simple when you focus on lightweight clothing, comfortable shoes, and essentials such as sunscreen, binoculars, and insect repellent.

For the full list of recommended items, see our Safari Checklist.

Zanzibar is a year-round destination, but the best weather is usually:

  • November – February (hot and sunny)

March to May is the rainy season, although travel is still possible.

For more details, see our Travel Guide.

Most travellers spend 5-14 days in Zanzibar, as that gives enough time to explore the most popular areas and enjoy activities like snorkelling and island tours. However, shorter or longer stays are welcomed and can be tailored to.

Many visitors also combine Zanzibar with a Tanzania safari.

Some of the most popular experiences include:

  • Stone Town tour

Yes, we can assist with visa applications and provide guidance on the process and requirements for different countries.

The best airport depends on where your trip begins and ends.

If you are starting a safari in northern Tanzania, the most common airport is Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), located between Arusha and Moshi. Many international flights arrive here, and it is the main gateway for safaris to Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire.

If your trip begins in Dar es Salaam, you should fly into Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR).

If you are travelling directly to Zanzibar, you will arrive at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ).

If your itinerary includes both a safari and Zanzibar, Savanna to Sea Adventures will arrange the domestic flights between the island and the mainland. These flights usually depart from the airport closest to your safari location and connect easily with Zanzibar.

In most cases, travellers only need to book their international flights, and we organise the rest of the journey.

The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but US dollars are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and tour bookings.

It is useful to carry some local cash for markets, taxis, and smaller shops.

ATMs are available in towns.
