Where to Travel in Zanzibar

A person in a yellow jacket walking with a backpack on a winding mountain road.

Stone Town

The historic heart of Zanzibar, Stone Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with winding alleys, carved wooden doors, bustling markets, and centuries of history. Influenced by Arab, Persian, Indian, and European cultures, the town tells the story of Zanzibar’s past as a major trading hub along the Indian Ocean. Visitors can explore landmarks such as the Old Fort, House of Wonders, Freddie Mercury’s birthplace, the Sultan’s Palace, and the famous night food market at Forodhani Gardens. Stone Town offers a fascinating cultural experience and is often combined with other excursions such as Prison Island or spice farm tours.

Nungwi

Located on the northern tip of Zanzibar, Nungwi is one of the island’s most vibrant beach destinations. Famous for its turquoise waters, soft white sand, and breathtaking sunsets, Nungwi offers a lively mix of beach life, traditional dhow building, and ocean adventures.

Unlike many beaches on the island, Nungwi has minimal tidal changes, meaning the sea remains swimmable throughout the day. Visitors can enjoy snorkelling trips to Mnemba Island, sunset dhow cruises, deep-sea fishing, and scuba diving. Nungwi also has a lively evening atmosphere with beach restaurants, music, and sunset cocktails, making it perfect for travellers looking for both relaxation and energy.

Kendwa

Just south of Nungwi lies Kendwa, known for having one of the most beautiful beaches in Zanzibar. With powder-soft sand and crystal-clear water, Kendwa is famous for its calm swimming conditions and spectacular sunsets. The beach remains swimmable throughout most of the day thanks to minimal tidal change, making it perfect for relaxing beach days and ocean activities. Kendwa offers a more relaxed atmosphere than Nungwi while still providing great beach restaurants, sunset views, and occasional beach parties.

Paje

Located on Zanzibar’s southeast coast, Paje is famous for its long white beach and strong ocean breezes that make it one of the best kitesurfing destinations in the world. The area has a youthful and energetic atmosphere with beach cafés, yoga retreats, and watersports schools lining the shore. During low tide the ocean reveals shallow turquoise lagoons perfect for walking, swimming, and exploring. Nungwi also has a lively evening atmosphere with beach restaurants, music, and sunset cocktails, making it perfect for travellers looking for both relaxation and energy.

Jambiani

Just south of Paje lies the traditional fishing village of Jambiani, known for its relaxed atmosphere and authentic coastal culture.

The long palm-lined beach stretches for kilometres and offers a quieter alternative to nearby Paje. Visitors often see local fishermen bringing in their daily catch while seaweed farmers work in the shallow waters at low tide. Jambiani is perfect for travellers seeking a slower pace and genuine island life.

Michamvi

Located on the eastern side of Chwaka Bay, the peaceful peninsula of Michamvi is known for its calm turquoise waters, quiet beaches, and some of the most spectacular sunsets in Zanzibar. Unlike many areas on the east coast, Michamvi faces west towards the bay, meaning visitors can enjoy beautiful sunset views over the water, something that is rare on Zanzibar’s east coast. The area offers a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere, with boutique beachfront lodges, palm-lined beaches, and a slower pace of island life. It is the perfect destination for travellers looking to escape the busier tourist areas while still enjoying stunning ocean scenery. Michamvi is also home to the famous The Rock Restaurant, one of Zanzibar’s most iconic dining locations, perched on a rock in the ocean just offshore.

Mtende & Makunduchi

Located on Zanzibar’s quiet southern coast, Makunduchi and Mtende offer dramatic landscapes and a glimpse of rural island life away from the main tourist areas. Matende Beach is particularly famous for its cliff-backed lagoon and breathtaking ocean views, making it one of the most scenic spots on the island. The area is peaceful and authentic, perfect for travellers wanting to explore Zanzibar’s natural beauty and traditional villages.

Kizimkazi

Situated on Zanzibar’s southern coast, Kizimkazi is best known as the starting point for dolphin watching tours. Early morning boat trips head out into the Indian Ocean where pods of bottlenose and humpback dolphins are often spotted. The village is also home to one of the oldest mosques in East Africa, dating back to the 12th century. Kizimkazi offers a peaceful coastal setting and is often combined with nearby attractions such as Jozani Forest or the Salaam Cave turtle sanctuary.

Kiwengwa

Located along Zanzibar’s east coast, Kiwengwa is a long stretch of white sand beach surrounded by palm trees and traditional fishing villages. The area offers a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful views across the Indian Ocean. The eastern coast experiences tidal movements, revealing sandbanks and shallow lagoons that create stunning natural scenery throughout the day. Kiwengwa is a great base for exploring the island while enjoying quiet beach days.

Pwani Mchangani & Matemwe

The villages of Pwani Mchangani and Matemwe sit along Zanzibar’s quieter northeast coast and offer a more authentic island experience. This area is known for its peaceful beaches, traditional fishing life, and stunning views of Mnemba Island, one of the island’s most famous marine conservation areas. At low tide, local seaweed farmers can often be seen working in the shallow lagoon;  a traditional part of coastal life.

The calm atmosphere makes this area ideal for travellers seeking relaxation, nature, and easy access to snorkelling and diving.

Muyuni

Muyuni, located at the northern end of Matemwe, is one of Zanzibar’s most secluded and untouched coastal areas. The beach here is quiet and peaceful, with sweeping ocean views. This part of the island offers a true escape, where travellers can experience Zanzibar’s natural beauty and traditional coastal life away from the crowds. It is also one of the closest departure points for snorkelling trips to Mnemba.

Uroa & Pongwe

Located on Zanzibar’s east coast between Kiwengwa and Chwaka Bay, Uroa and Pongwe offer peaceful beach settings surrounded by coconut palms and traditional fishing communities. These areas are ideal for travellers looking for tranquillity and authentic island charm. The wide tidal lagoons create ever-changing ocean views and beautiful sandbanks during low tide. Pongwe in particular is known for its beautiful sheltered bay, often considered one of the most picturesque spots on the island.
